Star Citizen Surpasses $35 Million in Crowd-Sourced Funds

In its continuing efforts to show that Kickstarter isn’t the only way to raise money for a game, developer Cloud Imperium Games announced that Star Citizen recently passed the $35 million mark in funding, achieving a new stretch goal.
When we last checked in two months ago, Star Citizen was just passing its $24 million mark. The game was announced about 14 months ago but has pulled in nearly a third of its funding in just the last two. And of that, the majority has come from new donors, according to a post from creator Chris Roberts.
The reward for hitting this mark is a ship called the Drake Herald, an armored ship meant to safely transport sensitive information, according to Roberts’ post. It’s unclear how the ship will factor into Star Citizen mechanically, but the continued cycle of added funding and rewards from Cloud Imperium Games is helping ensure an enthusiastic, attached fanbase that is closely monitoring development.
Roberts also addresses the delay of the Star Citizen dog-fighting module he’d previously promised, stating that he’d rather release a polished product than a stop gap that might not work the same way as the final product. Roberts explained in a previous post that Star Citizen will use its own netcode to house its persistent world and that anything released right now would be using the CryEngine netcode.
